Interview with Dave Whitley...

Some designs really just make you say "wow." After I saw this tweet:!/iammattthomas/status/193083941111070720

I immediately started searching the web for this DaveCave.

Dave Whitley is an extremely talented designer who has recently been accepted into Automattic. He has his own site(portfolio) which you can look at here. I am really happy that he agreed to be interviewed. Here it is...

Q. When did you first get into graphic design?

A. The real driving force behind the start of my career was my band in junior high school. I loved playing shows with my friends, and I was always trying to make things for it. I didn't have the slightest clue what graphic design was, but I knew other bands had shirts, album art, and logos, so I wanted to copy what they were doing. I got a pirated copy Photoshop and that's when it all started. I think pirated copies of Photoshop probably account for 70% of the creation of all designers. Some hacker somewhere deserves a medal. I learned how to make a logo, get shirts printed, and make the album art. The other bands around town all had websites, so that was the next thing I wanted to learn. I eventually got the hang of it, and made a couple of websites. I don't mind sharing one of my first websites. Pretty sweet, huh? Somehow it's survived all of these years on whatever server it's on. Back in my day, we didn't have all this fancy Google and WordPress stuff so we had to use Geocites and Angelfire. Fast-forward to college, and I had no idea what I wanted to do, so I had a plan of becoming a mechanical engineer. I even flirted with the idea of being an audio engineer and record bands. Even though I was doing all of this design in high school, I still didn't know what it was until a year into college. Seems hard to believe, now that more and more high schools have design related classes. I moved over into the graphic design department and fell in love. It's been a whirlwind since then.

Q. How did it feel to be accepted into Automattic and what will you be doing there?

A. It felt awesome. Patience really paid off while I was looking for a full-time job. I have no idea what I'll be doing, but I plan on making their stuff look even prettier.

Q. What has been your biggest accomplishment, so far?

A. Interning at Veer has been one of my biggest accomplishments. They are an awesome creative team but have moved on to bigger and better things with their new start-up, Uppercut.

Q. If I gave you a plane with a private pilot, where would you go and why?

A. Japan. They love cats.

Q. What can we expect from you, in the future?

A. Retirement.

I am telling you people, this is not the last you will hear of Dave Whitley. He is going to do big things, and I hope that sometime in my future, I will be able to take part in something he works on.

Thanks Dave,
