Interview with Stacey Edelstein...

Wohooo! Keep the streak alive!

Today is Friday and we have a superb interview. Stacey Edelstein is the creative director at Raygun. Raygun is...

"a web design and development studio in Brooklyn. We build custom websites, e-commerce shops, and WordPress plugins and themes."

Stacey was kind enough to answer my questions!

Why is Raygun special?

A. I love this question! I think what makes Raygun so special is that it’s a completely self-initiated collaboration between two friends who love designing for the web. Dalton and I form a close-knit team and believe that the design and development processes of a website should be intertwined. Even though I’m the primary designer, we work together throughout the design process to make sure everything forms thoughtfully and cohesively. We value collaboration, and I think we’re great at it!

Q. Why/When/How did you get into design?

A. When we weren’t playing Nintendo, my sister and I were always drawing as kids. I also loved practicing my handwriting, and still do to this day. My introduction to digital design was in high school when I joined the newspaper staff. Each month we would produce a 24-page, full-color issue and were completely responsible for everything, including writing, editing,  layout, graphics, photography, and selling ad space. I first learned to design with PageMaker and Photoshop, and pored over books to study graphic design theory and principles. Most of the websites we design now, like, use grid layouts that I learned in high school. It wasn’t until college that I started tinkering in web design.

Q. If you were an animal, what would it be and why?

A. No doubt, I would be a dog. Dogs are awesome creatures. Now what breed would I be...I’ll have to think about that one.

Q. How long is the design process for a theme or website?

A. Our themes and plugins have usually evolved from a need we wanted to fulfill for ourselves, so they tend to move along quite quickly. As for client work, the timing all depends on who we’re working with and the specifics of the project, but it will generally take months. We dedicate a good amount of time at the beginning of any project to understand the big picture, like what the goals are, who the audience is, what they need, what the client wants, and how we will roll it out. This helps ensure that the end result not only looks good and functions well, but achieves the business objectives. The more we know upfront, the more efficient the project will be.

Q. If you could have one thing in the world, what would it be and why?

A. A ticket around the world with Anthony Bourdain! If you’ve read any of his books or watched his shows, you’ll know why. He’s a legend.

That's all for today folks! Please check back in from time to time...for some awesome interviews!

Thanks Stacey,
