Interview with Luke Jones...

He respects Owl, because you can't help respecting anybody who can spell TUESDAY, even if he doesn't spell it right. - A.A. Milne (Pooh Bear)

Q. How/why/when did you get into designing?

A. I got into designing during high school. I took the usual route… playing around with HTML in my IT class and thinking ‘wow, I can do some really cool stuff with this.’ The more I played with it, the more I realised that I could combine graphics with what I was doing to make it look really nice, so I began to explore. I guess that’s still what I’m doing today… exploring all the possibilities I can to make something that works and looks great at the same time.

Q. What is great design?

A. I think great design is giving something clarity and making it right (and better) for the people who use it. It was Eames who said ‘Design is a plan for arranging elements in such a way as best to accomplish a particular purpose.’ and I don’t think anyone could put it better.

Q. If you could change your career to one other thing, what would it be?

A. My other real passion is music, so I’d love to spend my time making music and being paid to do it for a living. I don’t think you’d be able to beat that feeling of playing something you’ve created to an audience and getting a positive response. It amazes me that people have even listened to the music I make now (, so that career would be perfect.

Q. What type of computer do you use and why?

A. I have a 13" MacBook Pro hooked up to a thunderbolt display. The reason I went with the smallest Pro was because it’s light enough to carry around but powerful enough to run the applications I need to do my job. The reason I’m a Mac user is a long story really… to cut it a bit short, I tried out my friend’s MacBook and realised why people gave them nothing but praise. My personal opinion is that they’re second-to-none.

Q. If you were the size of a pea and trapped in a blender, how would you get out?

A. This is a tough one… I guess I’d either try to get the attention of the person using the blender or just wait it out. If that fails… I’d take it like a man and jump in the blades.

The wallpaper that I designed for Luke was inspired by his love of music!
