Interview with Chris Coyier(@chriscoyier)...
Today's interview is with a giant in the web design world. Chris Coyier is a fantastic designer who has created numerous sites with his web design skills. He has founded sites like: CSS-Tricks, ShopTalk(podcast), Digging into Wordpress, and Quotes on Design. So here it is...
Q. How/why/when did you get into web design?
A. It was a little bit after college for me, 2004-2005. I just loved the idea of building websites and used what little skills I had as a designer and computer nerd to build them. I was in an acoustic bluegrass-ish band and I built the website for that. I made a personal site for myself. I made some silly sites. The more I did the more I knew I wanted to do it for a living. Eventually that little "portfolio" of sites got me my first job in web design.
Q. Why did you start CSS Tricks?
A. Right about when I got my first job in web design I started that. I really had no business starting a site about CSS, but I did it anyway. I was learning so fast at this new job I used CSS-Tricks as a place to document all that. That's still pretty much what I do.
Q. As a person who works on and with the web, what do you think, is the future of web design?
A. The thing I'm looking forward to the most is complete internet saturation worldwide. I want every inch of the Earth covered in free or very inexpensive wireless high-speed internet. I bet that happens before I die. The more people who use the internet means more collaboration, larger markets, more smart people making things happen, more of everything. The web (just a part of the internet) will continue to get better (more possibilities) and at a faster rate. If it goes away, it will only because something even better has taken it's place, which is fine with me.
Q. What computer do you use and why?
A. I just got a brand new Retina MacBook. I'm doing a big redesign of CSS-Tricks and I thought it was important to be using cutting edge technology so I can design for the future instead of the past or present. I've been a Mac user for going on 20 years. I've never been compelled to use anything else.
Q. What is your workspace like?
Well that's all folks. Here is the desktop wallpaper I made for Chris. Click the image to buy it.
