Interview with Dylan Seeger(@dylanseeger)

Today we have a cool interview with a cool dude. Dylan Seeger is a 17 year old designer/musician who is making his way into to very cool words. Dylan was very prompt in his responses and for that I am very grateful.

How/why/when did you get into design?

1. I got into design as a utility for my music. I've been doing my website since January 2010. I only started to call myself a designer after I had finished Readers & Reporters. I did a ton of work on the packaging, artwork, and promo stuff for the album and that is what really got me interested in graphic design. So, I started calling myself a graphic designer. Nobody has complained, yet.

What is your favorite genre of music?

2. Progressive Rock. Alternative is probably the more modern term for it, though.

Is there a connection between design and music? If so, what is it?

3. I think that there are huge connections between any parts of a finished product. The overall effect that a complete piece, such as a record, can have on an audience is influenced by every single part that makes it, whether that's the artwork, the advertising, the music or even the artist. I think that what is so great is that you can mix all of these different mediums together and you end up with a product where if any part of it were missing it would feel incomplete.

What computer/phone do you use and why?

4. I use a Mac mini (mid-2011) with a dual-core 2.5 GHz Intel i5 and 8 GB of RAM. I bought it about a month before I started Readers & Reporters and it's taken me a long way. I use a mini because I like to be able to swap things in and out if I need to without having to do any crazy things with a computer like an iMac. I'd use a Mac Pro but unfortunately I don't secrete solid gold from every pore in my body. We'll see what I have in three years from now but for right now the Mac mini is a really great computer (especially with 8 GB of RAM) and is really underestimated by a lot of people. I also use an iPad as my portable. I use an iPhone 4S. I love the design and how it works (forgetting for just a second how terrible the battery life is, the fact that it heats my hand to toaster-level temperatures, and that it feels like almost every corner in iOS is covered with various shades of linen). It fits in very well with what I need to do on a phone.

Who is one of your biggest idols?

5. John Lennon. He, along with some other people, helped me realize what a musician can stand for aside from just shooting out tunes. It's about more than that. There is something behind the music that really means something (socially, politically, etc.). It can have a great affect on the way that people see things.

Pretty sweet huh? Here is the desktop background I designed for Mr. Seeger!

Thanks Dylan!
