Interview with David Smith(@_DavidSmith)

Here we go...

Today's interview is with a fellow David! David Smith is the owner and operator of Cross Forward Consulting, a small company focusing on creating applications for the iPhone, iPad and Mac. He also hosts his own podcast Developing Perspective, which is one of my new favorites. I was so happy that David answered my questions.

How/why/when did you get into development?

I've been coding since I was probably 10 or 11.  My dad started me on qBasic and it just kinda stuck.  I started professionally when I was 17 writing GPS-based apps for the Palm 3.

Why iOS not Android?

Frankly it is just where the money is.  My goal is to be an independent developer and make the apps I like.  I've tried making apps for Android but it is just so much harder to get generate a stable living on Android.  I've been able to support my family on iOS for 4 years so I'm just gonna keep at that.

As a developer, what respect do you have, if any, for bloggers like John Gruber of Daring Fireball?

Bloggers and journalists are tremendously valuable, especially ones like John that aggregate and filter the day's news.  It is important to keep up with what is going on in the industry but doing that manually would be hard to do well.  Bloggers focused on Apple and related tech help me stay informed much more easily.

What is your favorite food?

Chili.  My favorite candy is a tie between gummy bears and M&Ms.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I'll just keep working to polish and improve my current set of apps.  In a few months I'll probably catch the bug and work on my next product but for now it is a refinement phase heading towards the holidays.
