Big interview today.
Today;s interview is with Jason Kottke. Jason is a very successful tech blogger and ex designer, who runs kottke.org, he is the creator of the Silkscreen typeface and has won a Lifetime Achievement Award for blogging.
How did you get into blogging?
After discovering the web in 1994, I built a series of increasingly elaborate personal websites until something finally stuck. 0sil8 was an episodic site for my writing and design experiments and for one of those episodes, I started the blog that became kottke.org.
What computer/phone do you use and why?
Macbook Air and iPhone 4S. I also have a 1st generation iPad that I use almost exclusively to read Kindle books in the dark and play Kingdom Rush. I switched to using Macs in 2002 and have had little reason to return to Windows or try Ubuntu or whatever.
What respect do you have if any for other tech bloggers like John Gruber, of Daring Fireball?
It depends on the blogger. I love Daring Fireball and admire what John has done in building a thriving business on his own terms. I don't actually read many other tech blogs on a regular basis so I can't really comment on anyone else.
What is the future of blogging?
People will probably stop calling it blogging but more and more people will do it. Blog was always an ugly word (compared to, say, "tweet") and wasn't likely to succeed.
What can we expect from you in the future?
Oh gosh, who knows? I don't really have a plan for my life, but I don't think kottke.org is going anywhere. I hope to find more time and energy to put into Stellar. Spending time with family is always a priority.
It was an honor to interview this web legend. Here is the desktop background I made for Jason.
